Taking In is a showcase of The Art Institute of Boston’s best contemporary photography, as submitted by the students and chosen by a jury of distinguished professionals in the arts community. This year’s jurors included photographer Rania Matar (finalist for 2008 ICA Foster Prize), Jim Fitts (Director of the PRC), Kristen Dodge (Co-Director of the Judi Rotenberg Gallery), and Arlette Kayafas (owner of Gallery Kayafas). The selected pieces are then published and exhibited.

This year’s exhibition take place at University Gallery in Porter Square and is open to the public. University Hall’s opening date is May 15th. Previous Taking In exhibitions have shown work by AIB students that have gone on to become successful working artists. Every year, our students continue to raise the standards in creativity and quality of production. This growth reflects the ever-changing trends and issues in contemporary society. Artist Talk - Mike Mignola

The creator/artist/writer of "Hellboy," Mike Mignola, will be speaking at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, MA tomorrow at 6:30pm. Mignola will be speaking about current and upcoming projects, as well as discussing his progression and success with the "Hellboy" franchise.

Gregory Maguire - Coming Soon to Lesley!

Gregory Maguire, the acclaimed author of novels such as "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West," "Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister," "Lost," and "Mirror, Mirror," is coming to Lesley University!

Thursday, March 27th at 7pm, Gregory Maguire will be speaking at the University Hall Amphitheater at 7pm. This event will include a reading and Q & A session, followed by a book signing and reception. Food will be provided.

You can reserve your tickets at the McKenna Student Center's help desk. The cost for this event is $3 for students with a Student ID and $5 for faculty, staff, and general public.

Shows You Should See

One thing I love about art shows is the postcards. I love collecting them. They're such nifty little keepsakes from the shows. These were ones I acquired today at school, you should all try to grab one before they run out...oh, and go to the shows, too :P

This show has been up for a while now, and the opening has already passed, but I encourage everyone to see it while they still can. For those that don't know where this is, this is the gallery that is located within the Porter Exchange Building in Cambridge. Right near all of those delicious sushi restaurants.

Another student photography exhibition, featuring photography majors Paris Visone, Chris Sanchez, and Allison Lang. The opening reception will be on March 28th from 6-8pm at the Newbury Building in Boston.

A non-AIB related postcard, the 2008 Image Awards Festival celebrates women in film and video at The Brattle Theater. On Saturday, March 29th, films will be shown from noon until midnight. Tickets can be purchased online ($15 per film, $75 for an All Access Pass). Boston Comic Con

Julian and I were skimming through The Weekly Dig and came across an add promoting everyone's favorite event...

BOSTON COMIC CON!

That's right, boys and girls. Boston Comic Con is returning for year number three, and will feature comic legend Carmine Infantino, a legend from the Silver Age of D.C. Comics. Also posted on the website is information for New York Comic Con, which will be happening from April 18th to April 20th. Our past readers of The Sketch Report know that Comic Cons are always a favorite of ours to write about, and with the big names coming to both the New York and Boston Cons, it definitely promises to be another awesome year for comic lovers everywhere.

GLOVEBOX Presents the Illustration Show

I'm pleased to inform you guys about an upcoming show presented by GLOVEBOX. GLOVEBOX is an artist organization created by former AIB alumni Liz Comperchio and Jodie Baehre McMenamin, meant to help aspiring and upcoming artists to show their work. GLOVEBOX, in collaboration with the Senior Illustration Portfolio class, will be presenting the show at Goody Glover's in the North End on Tuesday, March 25th, 2008 from 7pm - 9pm.

Many of the illustrators from the 2008 Senior Illustration Show will be hanging their work for sale in the restaurant. Portions of the proceeds will be donated to a number of charities selected by the artists and by GLOVEBOX. I encourage everyone to come see the work being put on display, as well as look in to GLOVEBOX's wonderful organization.

The Illustration Master Class

Recently, Julian discovered something super awesome that many sci-fi/fantasy illustrators will take interest in. From June 16th to the 22nd, there will be an Illustration Master Class taught at Amherst College in Amherst, Massachusetts. Enrollment spots are filling up quickly, so you'd better sign up soon if you want to join in!

The Short Attention Span Digital Video Festival

Hi guys! Currently, we have had some interesting events at the University, and due to the limited page space we have for the magazine, some of our articles are unable to make it in. Therefore, we are going to post some articles of interest for you guys to read! Today is an article by Graphic Design major Michael Gelobter, reviewing The Short Attention Span Digital Video Festival, which was held last month on Lesley University's main campus. The Short Attention Span Digital Video Festival, or SASDVF, is a rapid and eclectic mix of short videos. The goal of the video festival is to create an accelerated pace of expression. Most of the videos are under two and a half minutes, but pack the punch of longer films. In my opinion, the longer films seemed to lack impact compared to their shorter counterparts. The pace of the festival encourages artists to be clear and direct in their concepts. The concepts from this year's festival covered a wide range, which punctuated the rapid pace.

The films that stood out from the bunch were those that captivated the audience with a clear and definitive concept. “Thirteen Ways to Die at Home” by Lee Lanier was an attention-grabber in the beginning of the night. This film displayed a playful superimposition of absurd dangers on to retro video footage. “Thirteen Ways to Die at Home” expressed a postmodern parody of the fear conveyed through video in the second half of the 20th century.

Some of the films were visually interesting, but lacked in narrative. “Snip
Crunch” by Matthew Heimbecker had a strong visual concept in which scissor wolves hunted a paper-ball sheep. “Sheathing the Light” by Nicholas Baish was purely visual as a kaleidoscopic exploration of form, space, and motion. Other films relied on story and context to convey a message. Geoff Marian's “Falling” was a delightful and comedic account of two raindrops awakening to realize they are falling to the ground. The personification of the raindrops and their dialogue projected the theme of acceptance.

The best film this year, in my opinion, was Alex Cormack's “Soon Forget.”
Based on the soundtrack of a Pearl Jam song of the same title, Alex clearly illustrates the narrative. Furthermore, he subtly and powerfully accentuates the concept by employing 3-dimensional construction in a piece about emptiness. Everything in the video, from the characters to dollar bills, are built as boxes, which emphasizes the hollowness expressed in the soundtrack.

Overall, our first Short Attention Span Digital Video Festival was a great success in bringing artists together to express and absorb a large amount of content in rapid succession. Be on the lookout for this event next year, as it promises an entertaining variety of artistic expressions.

Hey gang!

So, after over a year of being absent from the scene, the blog for AIB's Sketch Report has triumphantly returned! Yays! My name is Krista, and I am President of the club and magazine. We've recently expanded the magazine so that all students may be involved, as well as allow members of the magazine to post their findings, interviews, ideas, and information on this blog for all of you to enjoy.

With that said, look forward to the Fall 2007 issue of The Sketch Report, coming soon!

Also, for those interested, tonight at Boston University, Chuck Close is being featured as a guest speaker at the Morse Auditorium at 6pm. Anyone interested in his work or painting in general should go check him out. The Morse Auditorium is right across from the Blandford Street subway stop, it's that grey building that's nearby 700 Beacon.

The Brattle Theatre
As of February 1, 2006, the Brattle Film Foundation has signed a one-year extension on their current lease at the Brattle Theatre! The major benefit to this event is that the vital “Preserve The Brattle Legacy Campaign will be extended through the end of 2006. Of course, film programming will also be maintained through the end of the year.

Despite this major development the war to keep the theatre open is NOT yet won. The Preserve The Brattle Legacy campaign has raised over $250,000 in just under four months – a major accomplishment – but only bringing the foundation halfway to its goal of raising $500,000 by the end of the campaign. A portion of the funds raised so far will be put directly into increasing both the Brattle Film Foundation’s marketing budget and its development staff.

STAR WARS: Where Science Meets Imagination
Check out Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination, in which film artifacts and ideas from the George Lucas films become the force that inspires explorations of real-world technologies.

The exhibition combines costumes amd props from all six Star Wars films, with video interviews with filmmakers, scientists and engineers; hands-on components, including two large Engineering Design Labs, where visitors can build and test speeders and robots.
